When people search for the perfect dog that will be the best fit for their families,  they are typically drawn to the cute little breeds that fit perfectly in their lap or a handbag. They are adorable and easy to take places and travel with. Small dogs make for great pets for older people who are retired or, whose children have left home. For example, I own a Maltese who has very fluffy long white hair that requires a lot of grooming and combing. I, however, choose to keep him completely shaved because he likes to think of himself as an outside country dog and so much dirt, mud, grass burrs, and many other bits of debris get stuck in all that hair, so I have it shaved off. He doesn’t look like a show dog, but he is clean and happy. My groomer understands this and cuts his hair exactly how I want it.
