New York Dog Giving Away Huges

New York Dog Giving Away Huges

While I was going through Instagram after a great Christmas day with my family, I came across the cutes golden retriever who gives hugs to strangers. This little New Yorker sits on the street corner of 5th and 17th in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood waiting for anyone in need of a huge. 5-year-old Louboutina or Loubie, named after famous shoe designer Christian Louboutin, started her tradition around Valentine's Day in 2014, but it wasn’t hugging. Owner Cesar Fernandez-Chavez, 47, took Loubie on walks and within minutes she was giving had shakes, and a couple of years later it turned into loving hugs.
Cesar never trained her into giving hugs, he claims it is all her. She is a friend to all, human and canine. The duo goes for walks, but they don’t get far. Loubie is excited for strangers to come up to her, but she doesn’t hug just anyone. While she is generous with her cuddles, she hugs those she has a connection with. If she ‘feels’ you, she will wrap her forelegs around their knees if she feels a connection. According to Cesar, some people have cried after receiving a hug from Loubie.
This loving canine seems to have gathered followers on her Instagram account has more than 200,000 followers. Some of these followers have sent her artwork or pictures, she truly has touched the hearts of many strangers. Unfortunately, Cesar and Loubie were victims of a Christmas day apartment fire and became homeless. On December 25, 2017, their apartment building in Chelsea caught on fire and was ruled accidental, was ignited by unattended candles on the top floor of the six-story building, according to New York Post. Luckily no one died in the fire, Cesar and Loubie were out for a walk during the time of the fire. Cesar lost everything including items from Loubies fans. “I lost a lot of memories, a lot of pictures, drawings of Loubie that were done by fans . . . so a lot of sentimental value . . . it hurts me,” he said. A GoFund Me page was set up for them and had exceeded $75,000. Sadly, Loubie was unable to give hugs after being traumatized from being homeless. It took some time, but the love from others gave her the courage to hug again.

The Power of a Hug

This is a heartwarming story, and this duo is surely spreading the love in a world that needs it. Everyone deserves to feel loved, even from a furry stranger on a New York corner. You can expect the same love and care from our staff at Diamonds in the Ruff. We offer a spa-like experience your fur-baby will love and deserves. Furry Feline Facts

Furry Feline Facts

Cats are interesting animals. They have been around for a long time, there is no exact date as to when they became domesticated. These little fur balls are a very popular pet to own, next to dogs. They are affectionate, playful, low maintenance and add health benefits to your life. You can view thousands of cat videos and memes, and you’ll have to admit they are just too funny to watch. If you've seen the videos with the cats getting spooked by a cucumber, you’ll get it.

So You Know

Cats have an exciting history and fun facts that many people may not know. Here is an informative list that will help you get to know more about your furry feline friend.

  • Cats can spend 15-20 hours a day sleeping. So that leaves them a good 4-8 hours to knock stuff off your table.
  • When a cat needs to climb down a tree, they have to climb backward. They can’t go head first because their paws point the same way and can’t grip.
  • Pope Innocent VIII condemned cats as evil and thousands of cats were burned. As a result, the rat population increased and worsen the effects of the Black Death.
  •  Cats can make about 100 different sounds, while dogs make only about 10.
  • A cat’s back is extremely flexible because it has up to 53 loosely fitting vertebrae so they can fit through that tiny hole in the fence.
  • Cat’s are very popular in America, with over 30% of us owning one. There are 73 million compared to 63 million dogs.
  • Believe it or not, cats have better hearing than dogs. They hear higher frequency sounds up to two octaves higher than us.
  • A cat almost never meows at another cat, mostly just humans. Cats typically will spit, purr, and hiss at other cats.
  • Nose prints are the equivalent of fingerprints for cats.
  • Cats bring you dead animals like mice because they think you can’t take care of yourself.
  • And last, a group of cats is called a clowder.

Road Tripping with Pets

Road Tripping with Pets

This holiday season you and your family might be heading to your favorite family spot or extended family members home. You may also be taking your other furry family members too and why wouldn’t you. If your dog is anything like ours, they freak out by the mere mention of going for a ride anywhere and that excitement will last the whole ride. Unfortunately, their cute excitement can cause stress or become a distraction during the trip. Luckily there are a few things you can do during and ahead of time to make it a memorable trip.

Planning Ahead

You might be going on a short trip or one that will take a few days, either way, The Zebra has a list of a few helpful tips that can make it stress-free and maybe a few you didn’t think of.

  • Invest in a travel crate. These crates are more spacious than carriers, allowing cats or dogs to get comfortable without risking your safety while you’re driving. They can also more easily house travel-friendly litter boxes for cats, compared to less-spacious carriers.
  • Plan rest stops ahead of time. Pack a leash — for both cats and dogs — so they can get outside and explore without the risk of an escape.
  • Check that microchips and tags are up to date. Even with the best preparation ahead of time, you’ll want to ensure your pets’ information is up-to-date should an emergency occur and you are separated.

During Your Trip

  • Keep your pet secure. There’s nothing more dangerous than a scared cat or dog interfering with you while you’re at the wheel. For dogs, have a designated area for them in the back of your car. For cats, keep them in a travel crate, so they don’t sneak up to the wheel. If your pet is in a crate, make sure the space is well-ventilated to avoid overheating.
  • Medicate in emergency situations. Car rides can be anxiety-provoking for animals, so if you know your pet is stress-prone, consider a vet-prescribed anti-anxiety medication.
  • Stop for frequent bathroom breaks. Let your animal stretch out and use the bathroom every couple of hours. Make sure to grab those extra bags you packed for cleanup.

Visit The Zebra to read the full list of tips to help with your drive.

Let’s Talk Turkey

Let’s Talk Turkey

Thanksgiving is fast approaching. This means family, friends, traditions, and an abundance of tasty food. If you're like me, one family member you also share this time with is your dog. As much as we love our dog’s, it is important to keep in mind that some human dishes are not safe for them to consume. Below is a list of Thanksgiving foods to keep from your dog (or cat). So, if you don’t want to spend your holiday at the vet's office, do your best not to fall for those adorable faces and keep these foods on your plate and out of their mouth.

Just Say No

When your dog comes begging play is safe when offering them table scraps.

  • Turkey- this bird is a great source of protein to offer them but give them well-cooked pieces that are boneless. Raw turkey can contain salmonella and be dangerous to your pet. Also, remove skin and excess fat from any pieces given to them. Boneless meat is as important, bones can cause vomiting and obstructing the bowel of both dogs and cats.
  • Any dish, such as stuffing, made with onions, garlic, leeks, scallions can be harmful in large quantities causing toxic anemia. Avoid giving these dishes to your pet.
  • Other dishes not to give your cat or dog would be ones that are made with grapes or raisins. This fruit alone is toxic to pets, even mixed in a dish is harmful causing kidney failure in dogs that can be fatal.
  • When it comes to desserts, it is best to limit the amount of sugar you give your dog. Pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce are okay to give in moderation. Another thing to keep from your pet is artificial sweeteners like Xylitol. It is great you are making healthier choices for your family, but these sweeteners can be deadly to your pets.
  • Another obvious dessert choice to keep from cats and dogs is chocolate. While pumpkin pie is the most popular dessert choice served, chocolate dishes are also hit the serving table. And some chocolate desserts are made with baking chocolate that is also harmful to pets.
  • One last thing, don’t let your pet overindulge on any dish. You don’t want your cat or dog to spend the rest of the holiday with an upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, or worse on the vet's table.

We want everyone to have a safe holiday including your pets. If your cat or dog ingests any of these foods, don’t hesitate to call your veterinarian right away. Also be sure that your guest understands the importance of not giving your pets any table scraps.

Do You Have a Scared, Timid Dog?

Do You Have a Scared, Timid Dog?

If you have a dog that is scared, timid or sometimes antisocial around other dogs and people, it could be that they may need to be socialized a little more. This does not mean that you have a dog with behavioral issues or that there’s something wrong with them. It just means that they need a little extra love and care when it comes to socialization outside of their own family and home. Many dogs can be trained to be kind, considerate, and sweet as long as they are given a chance by being around other people and other animals. Many people try to take their dogs to the dog park which sometimes ends in utter failure because the dogs are being pushed and forced into an atmosphere that they are uncomfortable with. A dog park can be very scary and intimidating for a dog that already suffers from social anxiety issues. The best thing to do is to slowly immerse your dog into socializing with other people and dogs. Dog parks do not really offer much security or protection so your dog may feel more irritable when taken to a dog park. If a dog is not comfortable at a dog park, it can create a dangerous atmosphere for them and for the other dogs and people around.

You May Want to Try Doggy Daycare

Doggie daycare is a wonderful alternative to a dog park because your dog will recognize familiar faces every time they go to doggie daycare. This helps to create a comfortable environment for them. Doggie daycare is also beneficial because it is run by people who have a love for animals and who will take the time and have the patience to help your dog through this process. Your dog will not be forced or put into situations that they are not comfortable with. They will be able to determine when they are ready to socialize. This small step can be the defining factor in the success rate of your dog's socialization skills. Some dogs need a little more time to be able to adjust to their surroundings and to other dogs around them. And at doggie daycare, they will have this chance on their own terms.

Thinking About Taking Your Dog to Work?

Thinking About Taking Your Dog to Work?

Years ago the idea of taking your dog to work was unheard of. In recent years it has become a trend welcomed with open arms. If you are a pet owner, you understand the emotional and physical benefits your pet brings into your life. Just like negativity and stress can overcome you, so can laughter and positivity. Studies have shown that pets have calming effects, can reduce blood pressure, and lower stress. Retirement homes are allowing the visit or permanent living of pets due to these studies. June 18-22 has been dubbed Take Your Pet to Work Week which leads up to Take Your Dog to Work Day on June 22. During this time and any other time employers allow pets in the office, they will see the benefits pets have on their employees and business.

According to Undercover Recruiter, there are a few benefits to bringing your four-legged furry friend to work.

Brings the Team Together
An office dog can bring the staff together and bond. In some offices, employees like to keep to themselves; but imagine how this could change if a pet were introduced to the workplace? People are drawn to puppies and dogs, and this could be the case among employees, and before you know it, they will be spending time with each other in the process! It will also become a shared interest among employees, creating a new point of conversation.
Encourages Healthy Living
If you have a dog in the office, the pet will require walking and feeding. During this time, employees will be “exercising” without even knowing it. There could also be a shared responsibility among the team or create a dog walking schedule, it will encourage your employees to be active and get some fresh air. The reduced stress levels will also do everyone’s health a world of good.
Pets Won’t Have to be Left Alone
Welcoming pets into the office doesn't just benefit your employees but, dogs will love it as well. Dogs don’t like to be left on their own for too long, and neither is it fair to do so. By allowing employees to bring their pet to work, it means that they don’t have to worry about leaving them at home all day long or find someone to look after them. This may also encourage staff to work longer hours, as they won’t feel rushed to get home.

Dog Grooming Facility in Abilene

Who wouldn’t love having their pet at work with them? With so many employers welcoming this concept knowing the benefits, it’s no wonder the idea is so popular. But no one wants to take their pet to work without being groomed and ready. If your dog needs a day at the s-paw, bring them to Diamonds in the Ruff Pet Resort. We offer several spa services and have a caring staff with years of experience in dog grooming and care. Why Do Cats Have Independent Attitudes

Why Do Cats Have Independent Attitudes

There is no denying the fact that cats are not as friendly as dogs as a whole. Yes, there are some very friendly cats, but typically they exhibit more independence than most dogs. Even people who call themselves cat people typically agree, which is one of the reasons why they prefer cats over dogs. They like the fact that cats somewhat take care of themselves and do not require near as much attention as a dog. There have been a few studies conducted by experts who believe that cats attitudes and behaviors may come from the fact that cats are the only domestic animal that was not ever domesticated by humans. It's believed that when they were wild, they began moving into cities and then eventually into people’s homes. People solely used them to kill rats. Most people did not view cats as a worthy pet but more as a free exterminating service.

Why Choose a Cat over a Dog?

Many people prefer cats over dogs, and this is for a variety of reasons. Cats do not require near as much attention as dogs. They do seek attention but not as much as a dog. They also do not have to be let out of the house to go to the bathroom. They become litter box trained therefore you do not have to go home on your lunch break to let your cat out go to the bathroom. They are also self-sufficient and do not require bathing and grooming. They also sleep a lot more than a dog does. They are perfectly fine finding things to do inside the house to occupy their time and do not need to be taken on walks every day in order to keep them healthy. So, essentially, they require a lot less attention from their owners.

Cat Boarding in Abilene, Texas

Although cats are typically self-sufficient and can be left on their own for longer periods of time than a dog, they still do need to be cared for while you are away. If you are leaving for an extended amount of time, then it is best to board your cat somewhere so that they get fresh water, food, and a clean litter box while you are away. If you are looking for a great place to board your cat while you are away, then call and set up an appointment with Diamonds in the Ruff. Unfortunate Grooming Experiences

Unfortunate Grooming Experiences

For many of us, we are entirely comfortable with taking our dog to the groomer, knowing that they are in good hands, and anxiously waiting to go pick them up when they are finished. We anticipate seeing their fresh-new haircut and can’t wait to see them knowing that they are well groomed and clean with trimmed nails and smelling like they just left the doggy salon. This is the experience that many of us have when we take our dog to the groomer. This, however, is not always the case. I have recently learned that many people are not comfortable with their groomer and have had lousy grooming experiences which make them apprehensive to even take their dog to a groomer in the first place. In an article not long ago, a dog that had his ear chopped off at a grooming service. If this was not bad enough, the grooming agency tried to hide the fact that they accidentally cut the dog’s ear off and tried to tell the dog’s owner that it was like that when the dog was dropped off. This, of course, is utterly preposterous and the grooming agency was completely at fault. Many other people have taken issue with different grooming agencies because some groomers are mean to the dogs and abuse them as a way to try and get them to comply. This is awful as well.

Your Dog Should Love Their Groomer

Your dog should not shy away from the groomer or act scared. They should be excited knowing that they are about to be spoiled and pampered. If your dog seems off when they arrive at the groomers, then there’s probably something wrong, and the groomer may not be treating them the way they should be treated. It may also mean that you should probably find a new groomer. Unfortunately, not all groomers enjoy their jobs, and not all groomers have the kindness and patience it takes to work with dogs. Some dogs are scared, exhibit signs of anxiety, or bite and snap in defense when the clippers get close to them. This is only because they are not comfortable, so it takes a special kind of person to be able to calm a dog who is scared and help them trust the groomer. Being a groomer is not for everyone. Some groomers are good at their jobs, and some are not. Just because they can cut a dog’s hair and give them a bath doesn’t make them a good groomer.

Dog Grooming in Abilene, Texas

If you are looking for a trusted groomer who not only does a wonderful job on your dog but is kind, compassionate, and friendly then come check us out at Diamonds in the Ruff. Adopt Don’t Shop

Adopt Don’t Shop

This is a slogan that has gained in popularity over recent years. More and more people are choosing to adopt from pet shelters than to pay high prices for purebred dogs from breeders. This is a wonderful concept since there are so many dogs and cats that get put in shelters each and every day and have little to look forward to. Most of these animals are looking to a bleak future which typically involves being euthanized. If you have considered adding to your family, adopting may be the right choice. Because more pets go into shelters than they are coming out, there are over 2 million adoptable cats and dogs. Many people don’t realize there are several rewards for adopting an animal rather than buying.

Fulfilling Rewards

One obvious reward in adopting is you are saving a life. By adopting, you save the life of a loving animal who will be a great part of your family. Most of these animals are in a shelter because of a human problem, like a move or divorce. So, a lot of them have had experience with other people, animals, and children and are already housetrained. Many people may not realize the money they can save when they adopt. The cost to spay/neuter and the first set of vaccinations is included in the adoption fee. And there are some places that will include microchipping in the fee. Having a pet in your home has health benefits. Animals have been shown to be psychologically, emotionally and physically beneficial to their companions. There is a sense of fulfillment and purpose when providing for an animal. It has come to light that when buying a pet online, from a store, or flee market, it is possible you are buying from a puppy mill. Puppy mills are factory-style breeding facilities that put profit above the welfare of dogs. Without even knowing it, you could be buying an animal who was kept in poor conditions, suffered abuse, or is sick. They will continue to be operational until people stop supporting them. Adopting could change a homeless animal’s world, and give them a second chance at a fulfilling life.

Taking Good Care Of Your Adopted Dog

After you have made the happy decision of adopting, the next step is to treat your new fur baby to a spa day. Contact Diamonds in the Ruff and let our trained group of professionals treat your dog to breed-specific, quality haircuts, coat maintenance, & skin conditioning. Regularly scheduled grooming not only helps your pet look and feel good, but it’s also an essential part of maintaining optimal pet health. You can call and schedule an appointment at 325-695-2931 or visit us at www.diamondsintheruffpetboarding.com for more information about dog grooming in Abilene.

What to Look for in a Pet Resort Facility

What to Look for in a Pet Resort Facility

It is essential that you and your pet feel comfortable with the facility you plan to leave them at; this could be the groomer, the boarding facility, or a cattery. The first thing that you should look for after picking up your pet from the facility is their behavior. Are they happy, do staff members interact with them, or does your pet seem sad, skittish, or scared? If so, these are probably signs that you need to find a new facility with a caring and professional staff. It also helps to know the background of the place you are entrusting your pet to. At Diamonds in the Ruff, you will see that the owner is a member of the International Professional Groomers Association, the Better Business Bureau, the International cat boarding and Pet Services Association, and the Abilene Chamber of Commerce. You can also see that the owner runs a family owned and operated business that has been quite successful since 2003. This means that they have a lot of experience in what they do and apparently has a love for it. The owner is an International Certified Master Groomer and also certified by the International Professional Groomers Association. Their ultimate goal is to make sure that your pet feels safe, happy, and loved while in their care.

Dog Grooming Doesn’t Have To Be Difficult

Dog Grooming Doesn’t Have To Be Difficult

How many of you have taken your dog to the groomer and after getting there realize that you are in over your head? Top knots, mohawks, lion cuts, faux hawks, teddy bears, short hair, long hair, complete shaves, face trims, and a plethora of other types of haircuts all describe the different styles your dog can have. Getting your dog groomed can be more overwhelming than going to the salon and choosing a new style for yourself. This is because most of us are not well acclimated to the different types of dogs styles and haircuts that go with each dog. Believe it or not, different breeds have different types and styles of cuts that best suits them. This does not mean that the groomer should disregard your wishes if you do know exactly what it is you’re going in for. This does, however, mean that the groomer should have some type of idea on what would look best on your dog and be able to offer advice and information on the particular cut. This helps to take the pressure off of you and making sure that your dog does not come out of the groomer looking out of sorts. If you’re going to pay for a service, you probably want something you could not have accomplished at home on your own.

What Makes a Good Groomer?

A good groomer is going to help direct you in the style that will best suit your pet. Groomers are not going to overwhelm you with technical haircutting terms that you are not familiar with. They’re going to show you pictures and help you to visualize what your pet will look like with a particular cut. They will fully understand that the appearance of your dog is just as important as your own appearance. Therefore, you want to make sure that they look and feel good when they leave the groomer. This is what a good groomer will do if they truly enjoy their job and have experience as well. And we all know that we want to leave our dogs in the care of people who truly do enjoy their job.

Dog Grooming in Abilene, Texas

If you are looking for a dog grooming service that embodies all of the above qualities, then contact us at Diamonds in the Ruff where our dedicated team will take the time to advise you and make sure that we meet all of you and your pet’s needs. Call and set up an appointment today at 325-695-2931 or you can visit us at www.diamondsintheruffpetboarding.com for more information. We not only offer professional dog grooming but cat and dog boarding as well. You can expect a staff who is responsible and caring while your pet is in our care. The resort owners live on-site, allowing for continuous monitoring and providing extra peace of mind!

Does Your Dog Need Socialization?

Does Your Dog Need Socialization?

Dogs are a lot like us, if they spend their time in isolation, then they don’t experience all the positive aspects of socialization. To make your dog more sociable, you have to get your dog around other people and animals. You are probably wondering how you can get your dog to socialize more in a safe and fun environment. And you may not know of any places to take your dog for social interaction. You could take your pooch to a dog park, but it is pretty iffy as to whether or not other dogs are going to be there and if you have time to take your dog to the dog park. So you probably think you’re entirely out of options. There is, however, another option. That is doggy daycare.

Doggy Daycare Is a Way to Socialize

Doggy daycare is an excellent way to get your dog to socialize for multiple reasons. The first reason is that there are lots of dogs at doggy daycare. So you can count on there being the same dogs there every day for your dog to bond with. If you have a lot of time constraints and don’t have time to take your dog to the dog park than doggy daycare is also an excellent alternative for that. You can drop your dog off on the way to work and then pick your dog up on the way home. This serves as another advantage as well because now you don’t have to worry about your dog getting lonely or bored at home while you’re at work. And most of all your dog will begin to socialize and become a much more sociable animal. At doggie daycare, you can be sure that you fur-baby is in a safe environment with a staff who has the years of experience handling dogs of different sizes and breeds. Also, at doggie daycare, all dogs will receive plenty of play time, scheduled potty breaks, and healthy meals.

Doggy Day Care in Abilene, Texas

Picking the proper or right doggy daycare is very important. You have to choose the right place that you know your dog will be safe in and be around other dogs that are also safe. Diamonds in the Ruff is the place to consider. It offers a wide variety of services for your dog that includes dog grooming, boarding for your dog, and doggy daycare. Your dog will look forward to coming to Diamonds in the Ruff every day, it will be the highlight of their day. Contact us at 325-695-2931 or visit us at www.diamondsintheruffpetboarding.com for more information about doggie daycare in Abilene. We would love to have your fur-baby stay with us.

Do You Have an Aging Dog?

Do You Have an Aging Dog?

Those of us who are dog lovers don’t always think about the aging process when we purchase or adopt a new puppy. We always think that we have years with them. However, their years are much shorter than ours. Something that dogs and humans do have in common though is the side effects of aging. Some dogs handle aging better than others, but some are plagued with a plethora of health problems. Even though some dogs seem physically healthy, their mental state may not be. As dog's age, they can become depressed just like humans. The issue is that they cannot tell us they are depressed. There are signs to watch out for, but sometimes the symptoms are just lumped into the category of old age. For example, your dog may become less active, and lounge around a lot more which could be a sign of depression or could be a sign that their bodies are wearing out with age. Aging is a very depressing thing for dogs and their owners.

What Can Be Done for a Depressed Dog?

Obviously, giving your dog a lot more attention can help with the depression problem. Maybe, you and your dog do not go outside and play as much anymore because they can’t handle it since they are getting older or you may not have as much time for your dog now as you did when they were younger. There is a small chance you may be subconsciously giving them less attention because you know the inevitable is right around the corner and want to make it a little easier on yourself when their passing does come. Whatever the reason, a lack of attention can create depression in any dog but especially older ones. This is why it is important to try to compensate for time and attention with your dog. For example, if you can no longer take your dog to the park to play, or take them jogging with you, do other things with them. Taking them to the groomer to have a spa day is something that will show your dog just how much you care about them. We all love the spa, and so will your dog. Not only will a spa day make your dog feel good, but the experience of socializing with other dogs can do them some good.

Have a Weekend Trip Coming Up?

Have a Weekend Trip Coming Up?

Do you have a weekend trip coming up? Perhaps you’re running to Fredericksburg for the weekend, maybe to the Wichita mountains for some outdoor activity, or a quick trip to the coast. Weekend trips are really fantastic. They don’t have to cost a lot, per se as a regular vacation because of the nature of the trip. The weekend trip does, however, feel kind of like a vacation. You’re getting away from everything and having the opportunity to decompress after a long hard week. The weekend trip is a great time to spend with family and to connect with the kids. Not to mention a weekend trip gives you the opportunity to visit new places that could become potential vacation spots. Many people see weekend trips as the lifeline to keep them sane each year from one vacation to the next.

What to Do with Your Pet

If you do have a weekend trip coming up, and you’re like many Americans and own a pet, then this can prove to be a problem. It is not necessarily convenient to pack your dog or cat and take it with you for the weekend. This can definitely be a struggle. A weekend trip can be too long to leave your pet unattended in the house. But you really need this weekend trip. Your family has been looking forward to it, and it is definitely unfair to forgo an enjoyable time with the family. It’s for this reason that you should consider boarding your pet. Boarding your dog or cat at a boarding service will grant you two things, first is the opportunity to take the weekend trip without having to worry about what your pet is doing and if they will be okay. The second is that your pet will get the opportunity to socialize with other dogs and cats.

Pet Boarding Service in Abilene, Texas

It’s Vacation Time

It’s Vacation Time

Summertime is the best time for vacation since kids are out of school and the weather is safe for travel. This means that many families are going to be hitting the road for vacation destinations, hopping on planes, or setting sail on cruises. Summertime is typically something that families enjoy together because they have plans for a long-awaited vacation. Summertime is a countdown for a much-anticipated break from work and school. Regardless of whether you are driving, flying, or cruising to your vacation destination, traveling tends to be the most common form of vacation. We all want to go somewhere for vacation time that we don’t typically get to go to. Some families have a favorite destination spot and go every year, while other families like to try new places and tend to travel to different states and/or countries.

What You Can Do with Your Pet When You Can’t Take Them on Vacation?

Most of the time, our pets are a great addition to our family, and we do not think of them as a hindrance to our day-to-day lives. But there are times, however, when they can pose a problem like what to do with them when we are going to be gone for an extended period of time. Many of us vacation for no less than a week but, sometimes there are times when vacation can be as long as 2 to 4 weeks at a time. Most vacation destinations are not pet-friendly. You never know when you may have to get a hotel even if you plan on mostly camping, and it can be a huge struggle to find a vacancy in a pet-friendly hotel. And, you can’t just leave your pet locked in a vehicle while you stay in the hotel. There are also vacation destinations where pets are not welcome at all. If you decide to take a cruise, you will definitely need somewhere for your pet to stay.

Dog and Cat Boarding in Abilene, Texas

Fortunately, there are options for pet owners. Pet boarding is actually very common for people who travel or vacation a few times a year. If you are in need of a pet boarding place, then contact Diamonds in the Ruff. They offer a safe and friendly pet boarding service. They will make sure that your pet gets the love, care, and attention they need and make sure that your pet doesn’t miss you too much. Contact us at 325-695-2931 or visit our website at www.diamondsintheruffpetboarding.com for more information about pet boarding in Abilene.

Summertime Is Really Hard on a Dog

Summertime Is Really Hard on a Dog

We all complain about Texas temperatures in the summertime and how excruciatingly hot it is. What we sometimes don’t think about is how terribly hot it is for our dogs. We believe that just because they are house pets and they get to sit under the air-conditioning like we do, that they don’t get hot. This is false because we get hot and we are not even covered in a thick layer of fur. Dogs don’t have sweat glands or a way to release heat except through panting, they don’t cool off or cool down as quickly as we do, and yet, we tend to forget how overheated they can get. We often think that they are dogs and can handle the heat better than we can, but this is not always true, especially for inside dogs. This is why we have to be cautious during the summertime and make sure that our pets do not overheat.

How Do I Keep My Pet Cool in the Summer?

The best way to keep your pet cool in the summer regardless of whether it’s an inside or an outside dog is to have them adequately groomed. Dogs usually shed their heavy winter coats as summertime comes which helps tremendously with keeping them cooler. But if you have a dog that typically has long hair, it is essential to have them adequately groomed in the summertime to help keep them cool. Keeping their hair short and well maintained will help them to be able to cool themselves off quicker and more efficiently. You not only get a haircut with grooming service, but you also get other essential treatments for your dog like getting their nails cut, angle glands pressed, and ears cleaned out. All of these services help to make your dog healthier and more comfortable.

If you are looking for a wonderful groomer in the Abilene area, then contact Diamonds in the Ruff. Our dedicated team of groomers will make sure that you and your dog leave happy. Traveling to Corpus Christi

Traveling to Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi is definitely a popular vacation destination for many families. It is easy to see why as there is a lot that Corpus Christi and the surrounding area has to offer. For example while in Corpus Christi you can visit places such as the USS Lexington, the Texas State Aquarium, and especially all the different eateries. Corpus Christi and the Texas coast, in general, offers a wide variety of eateries that are sure to delight. The entire family will find something they like. One of the first places you have to eat at is at Black Beards. Black Beard is located very close to Corpus Christi Beach and is a laid-back atmosphere that offers a variety of seafood dishes including fried platters. Another plus is that the location is thought to be haunted so while there keep your eye out for any ghost. Another great place to eat in and around Corpus Christi is Landry’s. Landry’s is located on a boat at the T Head in Corpus Christi. Landry’s is a bit more upscale and not as laid-back as Black Beards, but they offer a wide variety of dishes that are sure to please any palate. While everyone will be happy during this trip and find something they like, not everyone is there to enjoy it. If you have a cat or dog, it may be possible that they won’t make the trip to Corpus Christi with you. Not every hotel or restaurant will allow pets and finding someone to pet sit can also be challenging.

Dog Boarding Service in Abilene, Texas

It is very tough to take a dog with you on vacation. That’s why the dog boarding service is essential. A dog boarding service can watch your furry family member while you take a trip and you can rest easy knowing that your dog or cat is being taken care of with the same level of care as if you are doing it yourself. Diamonds in the Ruff is one such dog boarding service that will be right for your pet. Give us a call at 325-695-2931 or visit us at www.diamondsintheruffpetboarding.com for more information about what we have to offer in pet boarding in Abilene.

Summertime Dogs

Summertime Dogs

It is summertime in Texas, and it is HOT! This is nothing new as temperatures steadily increase from the 90s up into the hundreds as summer progresses. We live here and were used to it, that doesn’t mean we have to like it though, but we expect it. This is a time when typically men make sure they get their haircut and women either decide to cut their hair short or pulled her hair back in some form or fashion for the next three months. Why? Because it’s burning up and we want to stay cool. The same goes for our dogs. Summertime is an essential time to make sure that your dog is groomed so that way they can get their heavy winter coat off and stay cool in the hot Texas summer. This is especially true if you have an outside dog. Not all breeds need their fur cut because many have natural short fur. However, there are many outside dog breeds such as Chows, Great Pyrenees, Golden Retrievers, and others that have long or thick fur and would really benefit from being shaved. This helps keep them cool and overheating in the summertime and can help keep from outdoor debris like dry grass or twigs from getting into their fur.

Work Dogs During the Summer

Many people still keep their dogs outside. This is not something that everyone practices, and it’s becoming less common, but it still does occur. Even if your dog does not sleep outside, many people who live in the country and work outside tend to have their dogs with them all the time. They may bring them in in the evening when they get home but for the majority of the day there out in the hot sun with their owners rounding up cattle, fixing fences, working outside alongside their owners. This is also when it is important that the dog is well groomed and taking care of in the summertime.

Dog Grooming in Abilene, Texas

If you are looking for a great groomer in Abilene, then contact us at Diamonds in the Ruff where our dedicated team will make sure that your dog stays nice and cool this summer. It’s just as important to take care of our pets during the hot summer months as it is for us to take care of ourselves. We use state of the art grooming techniques, products & equipment. Summertime Vacations

Summertime Vacations

One of the best parts about summertime is having a fun vacation planned after a long year of work and school. There are multiple places that people vacation to now, however, vacationing typically occurs over the course of one week. This means you’re gone from home for an entire week at the least. Vacationing in the mountains in Colorado, cruising the Bahamas, or touring the Big Apple are all popular vacation spots for the summer. When most of us vacation it is typically a family thing. That means that everyone from the household goes on vacation. This is one of the things that makes vacationing so much fun, actually getting to spend quality family time together without the nuisance of work and the obligation of school. Not all families take vacations, but if you do, it ends up being kind of a tradition during the summer. Many of us look forward to the 1 to 2 weeks off every year that we get to go to a new place with new food and new experiences outside of the bubble that we typically live in.

What Can Pet Owner Do While They Go on Vacation?

Some of us have pets and 99% of the time they are not a nuisance to us. But, that one time during the summer when you and your entire family wants to go on vacation to a place that is not pet-friendly, it can be somewhat problematic to figure out what exactly to do with your pet. Not all of us have someone that can come and stay at the house to make sure that our pet is fed, watered, and let outside for bathroom breaks. This is when owning a pet can be a little bit of a hindrance. This doesn’t mean that we can’t go on vacation though. Fortunately, there is an option that takes the worry out of trying to plan for a sitter for our pets.

Dog and Cat Boarding in Abilene

If you are in need of a place for your pets to stay while you are gone vacation then come check us out at Diamonds in the Ruff where we offer full boarding services for both dogs and cats. Your pets will be well taken care of and kept on a strict schedule for feedings and frequent bathroom breaks. They will not be locked up in a kennel all day but instead be out running around and mingling with all of the other pet guests. Your pet will have just as much fun the week you are gone on vacation as you. Stop by and tour our facility or visit us at www.diamondsintheruffpetboarding.com to see everything we have to offer your pet.

Does Your Dog Go Everywhere with You?

Does Your Dog Go Everywhere with You?

Many dog owners treat their dogs just like their children. We see dogs in places that they are not typically allowed all the time. You may see a little Chihuahua in a restaurant, you may see a Pomeranian in a Walmart shopping cart, or you may see a West Highland white terrier at a movie theater. Whatever the case, most of these dogs that you see are very well taken care of and very well groomed. These are not your run-of-the-mill dogs that enjoy comfortable lives of playing outside and digging in the dirt like country dogs. These dogs are well maintained and are typically the apples of their owner’s eyes. These dogs could be considered pampered and spoiled but nonetheless very well looked after and taking care of. They have very specific haircuts, their nails are trimmed, they are very clean, and they smell good.

Large Dogs Can Look Well-Maintained Too

We stereotype these dogs as prissy, pampered, spoiled, and somewhat over the top. This is not always the case. Many dog owners own large breeds who take the exact same time, effort, and care in their golden retrievers, labs, and pit bulls that small dog owners put into theirs. The difference is we do not see there larger dog breeds in public area because they are much harder to conceal in public places. A pitbull is not a pocket or purse dog like a Pomeranian. This does not mean that their owners do not make sure that they are healthy, happy, and well groomed. It just means they can’t always show them off in public. Large dog breeds do tend to be a little less on the prissy side because they are so much more full of energy and require a lot more playtime and outside time to exert their energy which also means they get dirtier quicker. It’s not as easy to put a great Pyrenees in the bathtub as it is a Maltese.

Dog Grooming in Abilene

If you are looking for a wonderful groomer, who not only works with small dogs but large dogs as well then come check us out at Diamonds in the Ruff. Our trained professional grooming team will have your dog looking like a million bucks in no time. We offer a variety of services to make sure your dog feels and looks good. Weekend Trips and Pets

Weekend Trips and Pets

Owning a pet is definitely an enriching experience in life. Pets add companionship, love, and enjoyment for years; in fact, the pet becomes part of your family. The joys of pet ownership are definitely unmeasurable. On the other hand weekend trips are also enriching life experiences. There is something very nice about getting away for the weekend and detaching yourself from the stresses of everyday life. Weekend trips serve as an excellent refresher, a way to spend quality family time and to break up the monotony of the work week. These two life-enriching experiences, however, do clash with each other. Many times it is not practical for you to take your pet with you when you travel out of town. So it can be challenging to have a pet and also have fun traveling.

What Is One to Do?

How do you rectify this problem? How can a family have a pet that is a huge part of their life while still traveling and taking weekend trips to get away from it all? Well, you can build your travel plans around pet-friendly trips. You can try to find pet-friendly hotels or bed and breakfasts, you can camp where you’re allowed to take your pet or other pet-friendly options. Depending on where you’re going, however, that may not always be a viable option. The reality is that there are going to be times that you are traveling somewhere that your pet can’t go. So the real question is, "What can you do whenever that happens?" The answer is to board your pet for the weekend. By boarding your pet for the weekend, you’re going to ensure that your pet is going to be taken care of while you’re out of town.

Pet Boarding in Abilene

Of course, since the pet is a member of your family, you do not want to just leave your pet anywhere. You want to make sure to leave your pet in a safe environment where you know they will be looked after, loved, and taken care of just like you would take care of them. Diamonds in the Ruff offers a pet boarding service that provides all of these things. If you are looking to take a weekend trip and need the board your dog or cat, then look no further than Diamonds in the Ruff. They have plenty of room for your dog to play and a cattery with spacious condos. Visit them at www.diamondsintheruffpetboarding.com for more information about pet boarding in Abilene.

How Hard Is Bath Time with Your Dog?

How Hard Is Bath Time with Your Dog?

Whenever it’s time to give your dog a bath, is your dog super excited and happy, running right to the bathtub? If this is the case then good for you, we’re all envious. Or is your case like most of us, and that bath time is an absolute struggle. And by struggle I mean you having to drag your dog down the hallway lift your dog into the bathtub while it is trying to run away. All the while the dog is doing everything in its power to fight you to get away from the water. If this sounds like your situation, you are definitely not alone.

The Importance of Bath Time

This struggle to get your dog to the bath may seem like it’s hardly worth it. Especially if you are dealing with an 80-pound beast. But it is vital that your dog is properly groomed, maintained, and cleaned. If dogs are not given regular baths, they become filthy just like people. This means that they are prone to infections, to getting sick, or worst of all, smell bad. So preceding bathtime merely is not an option no matter if you’re dealing with Beethoven. Despite that, you positively hate bathtime, and you swear that you would never do it again. There is, however, a much better option that is going to save you a ton of pain and headaches. That option is taking your pet to a professional groomer.

Dog Grooming Service in Abilene

Just imagine it, you take your dogs to a dog grooming service, such as Diamonds in the Ruff, you drop the dog off and drive away. You come back a few hours later and pick up your nice clean and well-groomed dog. And that’s it, you’re done. How does that sound comparatively speaking to the horrors that are described in the first paragraph? I’m betting that sounds pretty good. And what’s better is by taking your dog to a professional groomer, the groomer is going to do things that you are not able to do such as trim the nails efficiently, do a flea dip to ensure that no bugs are crawling around, and to release the annual glands which are also very important. So if you're ready to leave this dirty job up to the professionals, then please bring us your filthy fur-baby to Diamonds in the Ruff. We are here to make your dog look and feel their best by offering a pleasant grooming experience. Come see us or visit us at www.diamondsintheruffpetboarding.com.

Does Your Dog Have a Birthday Coming Up?

Does Your Dog Have a Birthday Coming Up?

Many of us pet parents like to celebrate our dog’s birthday. It’s an important day, especially if your dog is important to you and your family and many of us consider our dogs as part of the family. We give our children birthday parties and celebrate their birthdays, so why not do the same thing for our dog? It’s nice to have a day set aside for your dog to receive gifts, puppy cake, and extra attention. Sometimes we forget how important our dogs are to us and that their birthday should be celebrated just like ours is. The best way to celebrate your dog’s birthday is a pampered spa treatment. Your dog deserves to have a relaxation day where they are pampered, groomed and massaged. Although our dogs cannot tell us how much they enjoy a spa treatment, it is important to know that a doggy spa day can be very relaxing for your dog and help to relieve tension and anxiety that they may have. It is also good for their health to have their ears cleaned, anal glands pressed, and nails trimmed. These are all essentials in keeping your dog happy and healthy.

Treat Your Dog on this Occasion

With our busy lives and schedules, we sometimes forget that our dogs need to be pampered to know that they are loved and cared for. They can’t tell us when they are depressed or having a bad day but giving them extra love and affection can help to ease any type of affliction they may have. Once you drop your dog off at a doggy spa and then go pick them back up you will see a definite change in their attitude and behavior because they are going to be happier and feel better after a spot treatment. Just because we feed and water our dog doesn’t mean we’re not neglecting them. They need mental and emotional stimulation to know that you care about them.

Dog Grooming in Abilene

If you are looking for a great grooming service that will not only groom your dog but pamper them and provide a spa-like treatment, then come and see us at Diamonds in the Ruff. We are positive your dog will leave much happier than when he first comes in, and you will be able to detect a noticeable difference in his attitude after just one visit with us. Call us at 325-695-2931 to schedule an appointment or a time to visit our facility. We offer pet boarding for cats and dogs in Abilene, with plenty of room, play time, and love. Don’t Shop, Adopt

Don’t Shop, Adopt

This is a common phrase that we hear and see on the radio and all over social media sites. Many people are encouraging adoption over buying a particular breed from a professional breeder. This makes a lot of sense, many places end up having to euthanize dogs because they don’t have the funds to provide care for them. It is absolutely amazing the amount of people who get dogs and do not take care of them, which results in them being caught or picked up by a dog catcher and taken to shelters where they are put up for adoption. The downside is that not all these dogs are adopted out, and they end up having to be put down. This is so tragic because many of these dogs would be perfect for families looking for a new pet. These dogs typically come with all of their shots, spayed or neutered, and have been thoroughly checked over by a veterinarian and are deemed healthy before being adopted out. These dogs are only seeking forever homes with families who are actually going to care for them.

What Are the Benefits of Adopting Over Buying?

The most significant benefit is that the dog you adopt does not get euthanized. The dogs that are adopted at shelters are also much less expensive than purchasing a full breed from a professional breeder. Many people will also argue that shelter dogs tend to be smarter, healthier, and live longer than full breed dogs. This could be because full breed dogs are sometimes interbred which causes deformities that you are not aware of until it is too late. Obviously, if you are planning on purchasing a dog as a show dog or of breedable quality then you want to purchase from a breeder, however, if you are only purchasing a dog for the pleasure of companionship for your family then adopting is much better.

Dog Grooming in Abilene, Texas

After you have made the chose in adopting a dog, one of the best things you can do for your them is to have them regularly groomed. Grooming not only makes them look and feel great but it is also essential to their health and well-being. If you are looking for a great groomer whose staff is kind and professional, then come see us at Diamonds in the Ruff. We have a loving staff who will care for your dog and make sure they have a wonderful experience. Visit us at www.diamondsintheruffpetboarding.com for more information about dog grooming in Abilene.

Tired of Struggling to Groom Your Dog?

Tired of Struggling to Groom Your Dog?

It may seem much easier to ‘train groom’ your dog yourself instead of taking them to a groomer and paying for someone to essentially do what you think you can do at home. However, this is not always the case. It is much more difficult to trim a dog’s nails and clean out their ears than you may think. Some dogs are not cooperative at all and tend to get aggressive and bite or just merely freak out while trying to perform these simple tasks. It is also essential that their anal glands be released and believe me, this is not something you want to do on your own. Those are just the simple tasks. The haircut is the hardest. Some dogs are afraid of the sound of the clippers, and some dogs have never received a haircut and therefore don’t know how to cooperate around them, which makes it very difficult. It is also highly probable that you will not be able to get the cut that you want if you are not a trained professional. With all of these things combined, people still insist on trying to groom their dogs on their own just to save a little bit of money.

Take Your Dog to a Professional

It’s best to just bite the bullet and go ahead and take your dog to a professional groomer who is experienced and comfortable with grooming your dog. Not only will they end up looking much better than if you did it yourself, but it is probably a much more pleasurable experience for your dog to have someone who knows exactly what they’re doing. Professionals are careful and patient. And because of this, they are less likely to cut your dog or trim the nails too short which can ultimately result in a painful infection. Groomers are also trained to detect any skin infections as well and any other abnormalities and report them to you so you can take care of them with your veterinarian.

Dog Grooming in Abilene, Texas

If you are looking for a dog groomer in the Abilene area, then come check us out at Diamonds in the Ruff. Our groomers are trained and certified and are familiar with all of the particular cuts that go with each breed. They are also well acclimated to working with challenging dogs or dogs who tend to be afraid of the clippers. They are going to be able to do an efficient job but still make it a pleasurable experience for your dog. Call and set up an appointment with us today by calling 325-695-2931 or visit www.diamondsintheruffpetboarding.com for more information.

Looking for a New Dog Groomer?

Looking for a New Dog Groomer?

Dog groomers are much like hairstylists. When you find a good one you don’t want to leave them or go to another. It’s the same for your pet. When you have a bad experience with a dog groomer, they ruin that experience for your pet and cause you to never go back to them again. There are many traits that are associated with a bad dog groomer. Sometimes groomers are mean to your dog in which you will pick up on right away depending on how your dog reacts and interacts with the groomer. Groomers are harsh and abrasive and to get the dog to comply they become physical with them. This, in turn, makes the dog less cooperative and they have an even harder time. Essentially, being physically aggressive with the dog does not work, so it is mind-boggling why so many groomers take this approach. Another sign of a bad dog groomer is the visible sign. How does your dog look when they come out of the groomers? Are they clean, are their nails trimmed, ears cleaned, and do they have the haircut that you requested? Not all dog owners want the stereotypical haircut that goes with their particular type of breed, so it is important that the groomer cuts your dog’s fur the way you ask them to regardless of their own personal opinion. For example, if you want your Maltese shaved almost to the skin because they have a tendency to overheat, then the groomer should comply even though this is not an attractive cut for Maltese. You know your dog best, so you know what their particular needs are and since dogs are as individual as people and their personal needs vary it is important that you have a groomer that will not only listen to your requests but also abide by them.

Dog Grooming in Abilene

If you are looking for a wonderful dog groomer in Abilene who is trained, kind, considerate with your dog, and will comply with your wishes, then come see us at Diamonds in the Ruff. We guarantee you will be satisfied with the services that we provide. We also provide professional boarding for cats and dogs in the same facility. Does Your Dog Need to Be Socialized More Often?

Does Your Dog Need to Be Socialized More Often?

There are many dog breeds that struggle with social issues. But there are also many dogs that struggle socially due to their own personality even though they may be of a very friendly breed. Many pet owners socialize their dogs by taking them to the dog park, on walks, outdoor activities, such as, camping and hiking, or just having other pet owners bring their dogs over for playdates. Some of us, however, do not have the time or don’t do it as often as we’d like, but we still need a way for our dogs to have some sort of social interaction with other people and other dogs. This is essential to help them develop those skills that are necessary for them to overcome social barriers. So, what is a great solution?

Daily Social Interaction

We may not have the time or energy required to make our dogs socially inept, but this doesn’t mean we don’t want a kind, friendly, socially active dog. What is the solution? Doggy daycare. Now, this may seem silly to some people, but I assure you it is extremely beneficial for dogs who struggle with social anxiety. At doggy daycare, they are actually introduced to the other dogs and staff at their own pace and at a level that is comfortable for them. There are games, indoor and outdoor activities, and toys which are all helpful in acclimating your socially awkward dog with potential canine friends. Dogs are not forced into situations that make them uncomfortable, but rather are slowly integrated into the daily activities of the other dogs. This is very important because the team of trained professionals who work at the doggy daycare knows exactly how to handle dogs who suffer from social anxiety. They are kind, gentle, and patient when working with your dog because their ultimate goal is to progress your dog to the point of being comfortable in social situations with other dogs and humans.

Tired of Fighting with Your Dog During Bath Time?

Tired of Fighting with Your Dog During Bath Time?

Most of us dog parents love our dogs to death; however, some of us dread bath time. Even more so then the dog. It is a fight, and a hassle to get our dogs in the tub, and then an even bigger fight and hassle to get them to stay in the tub. Nothing is more infuriating than having an 80-pound wet dog running through the house smearing soap all over every inch of the house. Not to mention that ‘wet dog’ smell throughout the house. If this is what bath time in your home looks like, then it could possibly be time to take your dog to a professional groomer. There are times we think of groomers as being useful if you have a small, prissy dog that needs a particular cut, or special grooming. This is not the case, large dogs can benefit from being groomed as well.

Why Does My Big Dog Need to Be Groomed?

It is a misconception to think that larger dogs do not need to be groomed because they don’t need haircuts. It is actually just as important for a large dog to be groomed as it is for a small dog. Mainly because dogs, large or small, need regular baths. Over time they can begin to smell, get debris tangled in their fur, or develop a skin condition that you may not see through their fur. Dogs nails grow just like ours and need to be trimmed to avoid damage and pain from walking, digging, or scratching. While at the groomer, their ears are cleaned out, and there is an option to have their anal glands released. Keep in mind, large dogs enjoy being pampered just like small dogs with a bubble bath massage, and a nice calming blow dry. Seeing what all a groomer can provide you, you have to ask yourself, “Do I really want to deal with grooming my dog?” The answer is more than likely a no. You may not realize how important this is to your dog's health, but it is.
