Those of us who are dog lovers don’t always think about the aging process when we purchase or adopt a new puppy. We always think that we have years with them. However, their years are much shorter than ours. Something that dogs and humans do have in common though is the side effects of aging. Some dogs handle aging better than others, but some are plagued with a plethora of health problems. Even though some dogs seem physically healthy, their mental state may not be. As dog's age, they can become depressed just like humans. The issue is that they cannot tell us they are depressed. There are signs to watch out for, but sometimes the symptoms are just lumped into the category of old age. For example, your dog may become less active, and lounge around a lot more which could be a sign of depression or could be a sign that their bodies are wearing out with age. Aging is a very depressing thing for dogs and their owners.

What Can Be Done for a Depressed Dog?

Obviously, giving your dog a lot more attention can help with the depression problem. Maybe, you and your dog do not go outside and play as much anymore because they can’t handle it since they are getting older or you may not have as much time for your dog now as you did when they were younger. There is a small chance you may be subconsciously giving them less attention because you know the inevitable is right around the corner and want to make it a little easier on yourself when their passing does come. Whatever the reason, a lack of attention can create depression in any dog but especially older ones. This is why it is important to try to compensate for time and attention with your dog. For example, if you can no longer take your dog to the park to play, or take them jogging with you, do other things with them. Taking them to the groomer to have a spa day is something that will show your dog just how much you care about them. We all love the spa, and so will your dog.
